Vienna - The IOM Regional Office in Vienna joins the UN Kino/Cine ONU initiative on International Migrants Day, when we screen Greece’s 2018 Academy Awards entry, “Amerika Square” by Yannis Sakaridis.

The event is being held under the umbrella of the UN Together campaign to mark International Migrants’ Day and as part of IOM’s Global Migration Film Festival.

The Global Migration Film Festival showcases films that capture the promise and challenges of migration for those who leave their homes in search of a better life and the contributions they make to their new communities.

Perfectly reflecting these complex challenges is “Amerika Square”, a film that focuses on an Athens neighbourhood and the relationships, troubles and mentalities of both the locals and migrants. The global conditions, difficulties and consequences of migration are boiled down to a sharp focus within the film, which won both the Special Youth Jury Award and the FIPRESCI Prize at 2016’s Thessaloniki Film Festival.

This IOM-hosted, Ciné-ONU Vienna screening will take place on Monday, 18th December, 2017 at 6:30pm at Topkino, Rahlgasse 1, 1060 Vienna. Admission is free, however, seating is on a first come, first served basis.

IOM’s first Global Migration Film Festival in 2016 took place in 89 countries. Some 10,000 people attended 220 screenings at cinemas, universities, cultural institutions and other venues. The festival hosted 13 feature films and documentaries and nearly 200 short films about and by migrants, as well as dozens of post-screening discussions and side-events.
