"Every Migrant is an Investor": Kyrgyzstan Diaspora Forum

IOM Kyrgyzstan recently shared a platform with the country’s president to focus on diaspora experiences and the role of migrants in development in their country of origin.

President of the Kyrgyz Republic Zheenbekov Sooronbai, opening the forum, noted “we have successful compatriots who have achieved a lot in their field and intend to invest in large investment projects in Kyrgyzstan, as well as attracting serious investment into the economy.”

He went on to announce the creation by his office of a council to work with investors.

Kubanychbek Osmonbekov, who now heads a construction company in Moscow, declared “every migrant is an investor. Annually, migrants transfer 2.5 billion dollars, and 95 percent of funds transferred from Russia. It would be good to create conditions and provide support, such as tax incentives, because many compatriots are ready to invest in Kyrgyzstan, but there are obstacles. This event is an important opportunity for us to deliver our message”.

Bermet Moldobaeva, IOM Head of Office in Kyrgyzstan told the high-level attendance: “As the leading agency on migration, IOM welcomes initiatives that maximize the developmental impact of migration, such as this forum, which we have supported with the Swiss Government since 2012. Our recent Diaspora Mapping Study shows highly qualified and successful diaspora members abroad who are willing to contribute to Kyrgyzstan’s development .”
