Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, from Ghana, died yesterday in Bern, Switzerland at the age of 80.
Paying tribute, IOM Director General Ambassador William Lacy Swing said "Today we have lost one of the greatest leaders of our times, a Nobel laureate, and a dear friend - a champion of justice and peace who, even at the moment of his death, was engaged in the search for solutions to conflicts in many parts of the world. May Kofi Annan rest in peace."
Regional Director Argentina Szabados, who also knew Kofi Annan personally, said that the former SG was a good friend of IOM. "He was always gentle but firm in his convictions. He was able to work across the spectrum, from top politicians and diplomats to humanitarian workers in the field and all respected him. He dedicated his life towards making the world a better place. Rest in peace".
