In order to raise standards and encourage cross-regional collaboration, Migrant Protection and Assistance (MPA) staff from the Vienna and Bangkok Regional offices  held the first joint training workshop on migrant protection, reintegration and monitoring in Istanbul from July 8-11. Attention was also focussed on increasing cooperation between MPA and the Organization’s Department for Operations and Emergencies (DOE) with contributions from a DOE Senior Protection Specialist and presentations by colleagues involved in humanitarian response and data.

The participants included MPA project managers and focal points from IOM missions with the largest direct assistance caseloads in the two regions. “The most immediate outcomes include the establishment of a cross-regional community of practice, commitments to integrate reintegration sustainability monitoring tools in countries where they are not yet in use, and further establishment of joint research between both regions”, commented Sacha Chan Kam, Senior Migrant Protection and Assistance officer in IOM’s Vienna Office, which covers Southeastern Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
