Regional Director Argentina Szabados represented IOM Director General Antonio Vitorino at the 19th Meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Police Cooperation Convention (PCC) for South-East Europe yesterday (7 November), held at the Austrian Interior Ministry in Vienna.
During her intervention Ms Szabados noted the opportunities for furthering and deepening the collaboration with the PCC and its Contracting Parties. “We are united by our purpose for making borders safe and well-managed, as well as building capacities where needed,” she stressed. “IOM is committed to cooperate and coordinate with other actors and organizations in the spirit of partnership, respectful of the different mandates.”
IOM has long advocated for a regional approach to regional challenges, allowing for practices to be harmonized and approaches to be streamlined. In this respect, said Ms Szabados, the PCC SEE is an excellent framework for cooperation and coordination.
In South-Eastern Europe, IOM strives to deliver tailored border and migration management programmes, committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society. “We acknowledge that the migration landscape has significantly changed in the region over the past years, with continuous movements of migrants through and within the region”, added Ms Szabados. “Managing regular as well as irregular migration has become an imperative ability, requiring adequate policy response and skills development.”
