IOM Moscow Chief Meets Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs

Newly appointed Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration in Moscow, Abdusattor Esoev has held talks with the Acting Head of the General Administration for Migration Issues of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Police Major-General Valentina Kazakova.

During the event on January 18, the parties identified several potential areas of joint activities, including cooperation in the fields of labour migration, combating illegal migration, and asylum.

“This was a landmark meeting for us, advancing IOM’s strategic cooperation with the government of the Russian Federation”, noted Abdusattor Esoev, Chief of Mission, IOM Moscow. “We’ve agreed to follow up concrete areas of cooperation at the technical level, mainly in the area of labour migration.”

Representatives of the General Administration for Migration Issues of the Ministry of Internal Affairs updated IOM on the latest changes in migration legislation of the Russian Federation, the impact of migration on the economies of countries in the region, and touched upon the main goals and objectives of the Concept of the State Migration Policy of the Russian Federation for 2019-2025.

Mr  Esoev gave an overview of the newly-adopted Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, and reflected on the importance of the efforts undertaken by the international community to solve the problems of forced migrants. These included the tasks of preventing and resolving conflicts, coordinating efforts in political, socio-economic, humanitarian and other areas, ensuring security and human rights, humanitarian assistance and integration.
